London Theater at Night

London Theater Endland

Off to the London Theater

One of the best things about London at night is the London Theater. There are so many playhouses, and so many good shows at any one time, it would be difficult to see half of them on an extended trip to London.

There is the Adelphi, Albery, Aldwych, Apollo theater, Apolo Victoria, Arts theater... and on and on. At any one time there are about a dozen top billing plays on the boards, plus dozens of other choices. Advertisments for the top price shows are everywhere in London. Perhaps that has something to do with the prices, maybe.

The exterior of some of the London theaters may not quite what you'd expect, given the ticket prices. But inside the class turns on and you feel that you are, indeed, in the London Theater in England. Dress can be anything from comfortable to quite fancy, depending on your mood and the venue. Just be sure to bring a sense of excitement, and be prepared to enjoy yourself. That way you will be sure to have a pleasant evening.

London Cuisine

Dining
Just a very short note on food in London. Whatever you like... it's there. I have had some of the finest Italian food in my life in the London theater district. Two Tiramisu after a full Italian dinner means there is something special happening. For a Greek experience, try Dionesus in Bloomsbury (ask a cabbie). Greenwich has Indian Lamb Vindaloo that would make Dave Lister whimper, and there are a million dining rooms that serve just plain English faire. I would mention pub lunches as a good idea, except this is about London at night. And in busy nighttime Picadilly Circus, there are myriad choices, even a TGI Friday's, quite a gathering place for both the American tourist crowd and the English 20-somethings.
But frankly, I would most highly recommend a plate of cheeses from hotel room service. If you hit it lucky, you can get something extraordinary. A bit of English cheese and a fruit plate before The Theater... quite nice indeed.

Casino London

Question:
Are there CASINOS in London.

If so, they would be prohibited from advertising, and would be for members only. Perhaps the requirements for membership would be the same as for cashing a check. I would not know. You would have to find their main offices in London or on the net, and see for yourself. If they do exist, they would feature most of the Las Vegas style games, including blackjack, roulette and slot machines, as well as bacarat in some of the more posh clubs. They would tend to be small, compared to Las Vegas. Some would be primarily for the normal player, some for the more well-to-do, and some reserved for the whales (high rollers). They would be kind enough to tell you which was which before you got your membership,
I imagine.

London Eye

British Airways' London Eye

Nighttime is a good time to try the London Eye, said to be the world's highest observation wheel. The Eye takes guests on a 30 minute "flight" (remember it's by British Airways) until about 10pm in summer, 8pm the rest of the year. You rise gently to 450 feet above the river Thames, in a fully enclosed capsule (so no need to worry about someone swinging the basket).

Regular tickets are quite reasonable, but if you prefer a private flight in the evenings when the wheel is closed to the public, that can be yours also. A minimum of 10 capsules are available at a cost of 3,500 Pounds Sterling plus value added tax. Waiter service with canapes and champaign is available at extra cost.

London Casino

And other things...

Night clubs abound everywhere. There are pubs open until half-eleven (11:30pm). And there are cutting edge venues open all night. Resturants used to have early closing hours universally, but now some are staying open later. And there are 24hr minimarts, if you can find them. Madame Tussaud's is closed to the public, but you can throw a private party in their Chamber of Horrors if you so desire. Other parts of the waxworks museum are also available.

A sincere word of advice is to make sure you can get a cab back to your hotel from wherever you will be, or that you know the location and hours of operation of a very nearby Underground station. London may be one of the world's safest cities, but don't push your luck at night.

Dawn is breaking. We'll get on down to Waterloo station and catch the next train to the English Countryside, and do remember your
