St. Moritz Winter

Ski St. Moritz

Once again, I feel like putting just one picture on the page. To me, this captures the incredible feeling of being at St. Moritz, perhaps the most desirable ski resort in the world. You can imagine yourself getting ready to take on the famous Cresta Run, or perhaps to view the horse races on the ice of the frozen lake.
Or perhaps just to find someplace snuggly for a warm drink.

St. Moritz

One gets to St. Moritz usually by flying into Zurich's International Airport, and then taking the train (Click here for Rail Europe) to your resort in the Engadin Valley, which includes St. Moritz's ski areas and several others, including Corviglia, Corvatsch and the Diavolezza Glacier area. Getting from one area to the other is is mostly by car, so you may want to consider a rental here if you are going to do a lot of skiing. There are also nice resorts in nearby Pontresina, Celerina and Silvaplana which are not quite as pricy as St. Moritz.

There are, as of this writing, 5 gondolas and trams, 7 chair lifts and about a dozen surface lifts in the area. The highest local peak is just over 10,000 feet. In addition to skiing the regular runs, you can try heli-skiing. And for a little diversion, there is bobsledding, hang gliding and paragliding. For current Snow Conditions telephone 41 (82) 33147.

Interlaken
Interlaken is a village of about 5,000 people that sits between the Lake of Brienz and the Lake of Thun in the same canton as the capitol of Switzerland, Bern, and of course the Bernese Alps and its most famous peak, the Jungfrau.

Interlaken

One of the best reasons for going to Interlaken is the incomparable views of the Jungfrau, as well as the Eiger and the third in the trio of peaks, Monch.

You can journey to a spectacular viewing area called Jungfraujoch, at nearly 12,000 feet, via a Swiss mountain railway. Or as on many of the waterways of Switzerland, there are boats to take you sightseeing from Interlacken to the Castle at Thun, a 12th century Swiss fortress.
